Sifnos is often referred to as the undiscovered island. And while this is not strictly true, the island has remained apart from the mainstream Greek tourist scene and attracts a more discerning kind of visitor. Yet the island offers everything you could want, from the souflaki take-away to sophisticated restaurants; from family beaches to dramatic remote coastal vistas; from hip bars and discrete clubs to spectacular hikes and historical ruins. It is easy to rent cars, motorcycles or scooters, getting around the island by bus or cab is effortless and there are all the amenities of modern life.
    The ruins of a network of 55 circular marble towers, unique to Sifnos, dates from archaic times when the island was just as uniquely wealthy with gold, and the Sifniot treasury at Delphi was renowned for its splendour throughout the Helenic world. Many of the stone-paved foot paths which criss-cross Sifnos are thousands of years old. Buy a map and follow them to the locations of once-splendid citadels that crowned several of the islands high points.
    There are many places to swim on Sifnos with beaches at Heronisos, Vathi, Xrisopigi, Faros and even right in the port town of Kamares. Swimming at Kastro is more for real swimmers where you dive off the low rock ledges into gleaming pools where the water is clear enough to see up to 100 feet.
    Sifnos has several different seasonal characters. In mid summer season a smart international European crowd gathers to while the nights away in places like the Argo and the Dolphin in Appolonia. But in the off seasons, in spring and again in September and October, when the weather is temperate and sublime, the numbers dwindle to a few people looking for simpler, quieter pleasures, and in winter the island returns to it's natural rustic self.
